Cynthia Costa, M.F.A., is an educator and generalist in the field of art history, with a distinct specialization in ancient Egyptian art and architecture. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting in 2000 at the Savannah College of Art & Design. Cynthia completed her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Art History in 2009, with a primary focus on Egyptian art but also pursuing secondary specializations in Roman and Early Christian & Byzantine art.
Since acquiring her degrees, Cynthia has been an integral part of the faculty at Georgia Southern University. Her current role as Principal Lecturer of Art History with graduate teaching faculty status speaks volumes about her deep commitment to education and her significant contributions in this domain. She has developed and taught a broad array of courses ranging from art surveys and special topics to in-depth explorations of various ancient cultures, such as Aegean, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations.
Cynthia combines her expertise in art history with a fervent approach to education, continually engaging with department and university committees, and has taken an active role in art history general education coordination and assessment. She has also showcased her versatility through her adeptness with various Learning Management Systems, including Desire2Learn, Blackboard, Moodle, and Canvas. Her exemplary teaching practices are further accredited by a certification from the Association of College and University Educators endorsed by the American Council on Education. As a certified Quality Matters reviewer, Cynthia has elevated the standard of online education, with multiple courses she has designed garnering QM certification.
Cynthia’s primary research explores the subtleties of eye types in ancient Egyptian sculpture, notably advancing academic understanding of the "sfumato" eye. Her scholarly pursuits are paralleled by her wide-ranging lectures and papers on a diverse array of art historical periods and movements.
Cynthia's holistic approach to education is demonstrated through her dedication to the scholarship of teaching and learning, evidenced by lectures and writings on varied educational topics including blended learning, student engagement during the pandemic, and innovative course design.
